Dog Artists? As in Dogs that CREATE Art!

I came across an old promotion for Denise Bibro Fine Art in New York Exhibition: Gone to the Dogs. This event was held last fall (October 8 - November 7, 2009) and displayed works of art by well, dogs!

So I did what any Internet hog does; googled for more artistically inclined pooches!

Ziggy a Pekingese dog has been painting since 2007, created over 25 masterpieces, has her own website!  Watch Ziggy create a masterpiece in this news segment by SBS Australia News

Meet Tillamook Cheddar a Brooklyn, 11 year old Jack Russell Terrier! This renowned canine artist of masterpieces has been displayed in art shows across the U.S. and Europe. Tillamook even has her own book! One of her son’s lives with her but sadly doesn’t not share her love or gift of the dab and smear.

"[Because of Tillie] I have had to rethink two of my most basic assumptions about art and life: first, the notion that animals cannot have an aesthetic sense; second, the core conviction that no sentient being could possibly paint anything worse than what Julian Schnabel recently showed at the Gagosian Gallery." ~ James Gardner, New York Post, May 2002

Over at Shore Service Dogs, they have trained intelligent dogs to help people in need with everyday living. However, these genius dogs also have been discovered to have an artistic side as well.

“The dogs here at SSD are an extremely talented bunch. Not only can they do complex Service Dog tasks but they've now become the world famous Doggie Da Vincis, featured in newspapers, magazines, television, and even National Geographic TV's "Dog Genius" program that will be airing in late 2007!”

The final animal I found that produces ummmm art of a sort is Tucker and his website PEE-ces of Art by Tucker . This art is produced by Tucker’s care taker photographing the detailed streams of his urine on the ground. Sometimes Tucker’s artwork is enhanced with decorative items such as leaves. I found this form of art odd to say the least!! Then I read Tucker’s bio “Portrait of the Artist as an Old Dog” (if you only click one link in this post, make it this one - Tucker's story is worth reading!) and it all became clearer.

Tucker was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that prevents him from lifting his leg. His foster Mom began photographing what she saw as art. If your lucky enough to live in Ohio, you can see Tucker's Art Gallery show that runs March 1 - March 31, 2010 at Bela Dubby Art Gallery. A portion of the proceeds of all sales to benefit two exceptional non-profit organizations: The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs and The Cleveland Animal Protective League.

My last bit of odd animal artist find is an elephant...
